Southwold Railway Heritage Project model

We were delighted to be able to present our plans for reinstating part of the Southwold Railway adjacent to the original station site at Wenhaston recently. There was much positive feedback from local residents and we have been able to address some of the issues raised at the meeting and tweak our designs as we add the final touches to our planning application. Nigel Purdy’s terrific model of the proposed heritage site brought David Negus’s designs to life, showing how the engine shed, workshop, visitor centre and offices have been designed to fit within the area without predominating in any way.

The actual application will be deferred for a few months to enable a thorough wildlife survey to be undertaken at the start of the 2011 breeding season. This will help us to ensure that our plans deal accurately with any possible effect of the heritage project on local wildlife, and enable us to preserve and enhance wildlife habitats wherever possible. Keep reading the blog for future developments!

Friends – very nice looking model of a revived Wenhaston. Would it also be possible to publish (at least draft) maps showing how this project fits into the surrounding landscape/the village/the roads/etc.?

  • Further details and draft plans will appear in the Trust Newsletters (available to members) in the near future. Rest assured full details will appear on the website in due course.

Hi all at S.R. including James H.First congrats on an interesting and well-organized site. Please treat any of our comments as totally constructive/supportive.Basically felt a need for more info.A detailed map of theWenhaston Project would be good. A map of the rejected 2007 plan and explanation of “local opposition”. So what are the revized long term rebuilding plans? How realistic are they? More maps please. Rolling stock. Is there a plan to build, truly appropriate ,replica rolling stock ?A Cleminson coach and wagon would set your project apart. N.B. W.L.R. Pickerings ,Corris Coach,Welsh Highland [P] Rly Ashbury etc. A tad envious that you can get on ,at least a little, of the original track bed without any other railway co. involved. Good luck……..Geoff and Marilyn clifford

  • Thanks for the support – glad you like the website! The plans for the Wenhaston Station restoration are nearly complete – just a traffic survey to do. This should be in the public domain by the end of July, we hope and I feel sure there will be more maps and things in due course. Understandably, the Trustees are busy with other things at present! A Cleminson coach would be nice, but we hope to start off with our tram carriage to get established. It really IS a question of “Watch this space…!”
